Dense granular flows in rotating drums: A computational investigation of constitutive equations

نویسندگان

چکیده

Novel 3D measures of compressibility and isotropy (coaxiality collinearity) are proposed to test constitutive laws rotating drum flows using the DEM with μ(I) rheology is tested. The coaxiality measure produces a lower occurrence frequency than equivalent 2D simulation for nearly all angular separations, while collinearity shows minimal deviation. high degree facilitated by across gravity-driven, flowing layer, non-zero volumetric component velocity gradient tensor near bottom densely-packed rising en-masse layer. simulations facilitate which ultimately leads better regularisation equations. An empirically-derived friction law statistically fits when compared several other in literature; however, models fail capture behaviour at very low inertial numbers. failure suggests gross instability governing equations signature ill-posedness and/or shear banding.

A new constitutive law for dense granular flows

In many geophysical or industrial applications involving flows of grains, a continuum description would be of considerable help, for example in predicting natural hazards or in designing industrial processes. However, constitutive equations for dry granular flows are still matter of debates 1-10. One difficulty is that grains can behave like a solid (in a sand pile), a liquid (when poured from ...

Numerical tests of constitutive laws for dense granular flows.

We numerically and theoretically study the macroscopic properties of dense, sheared granular materials. In this process we first consider an invariance in Newton's equations, explain how it leads to Bagnold's scaling, and discuss how it relates to the dynamics of granular temperature. Next we implement numerical simulations of granular materials in two different geometries--simple shear and flo...

Continuous Avalanche Segregation of Granular Mixtures in Thin Rotating Drums

We study segregation of granular mixtures in the continuous avalanche regime (for frequencies above 1 rpm) in thin rotating drums using a continuum theory for surface flows of grains. The theory predicts profiles in agreement with experiments only when we consider a flux-dependent velocity of flowing grains. We find the segregation of species of different size and surface properties, with the s...

Granular flow in partially filled slowly rotating drums

In many industrial processes granular materials are mixed together in partially filled slowly rotating drums. In this paper a general theoretical framework is developed for the quasi-two-dimensional motion of granular material in a rotating drum. The key assumption is that the body can be divided into a fluid-like and a solid-like region, that are separated by a non-material singular surface at...

Unsteady granular flows in a rotating tumbler.

The characteristics of steady granular flow in quasi-two-dimensional rotating tumblers have been thoroughly investigated and are fairly well understood. However, unsteady time-varying flow has not been studied in detail. The linear response of granular flow in quasi-two-dimensional rotating tumblers is presented for periodic forcing protocols via sinusoidal variation in the rotational speed of ...
